The story of Riche
Riche opened in 1893 at Birger Jarlsgatan 4, modelled on Café Riche on the Boulevard des Italiens in Paris. The building was finished two years later and was one of the first in Stockholm with facades entirely of natural stone. Riche has stayed at the same address ever since.
In the 1930s it became a second living room for the actors of the Royal Dramatic Theatre round the corner, and for writers and artists. During the Second World War the business struggled, and the restaurateur Tore Wretman took over with backing from the Wallenberg, Bonnier and Sachs families. In Wretman's time Ingmar Bergman and Zarah Leander were among the regulars.
The glazed veranda facing Birger Jarlsgatan began as a summer terrace. In 1965 it was made permanent, designed by the architect Nils Tesch. The meatballs are still one of the house classics.
