The story of Konstnärsbaren
Konstnärsbaren, known as KB, is on the ground floor of Konstnärshuset, the artists' house on Smålandsgatan 7. The building was designed by Ludvig Peterson and finished in 1899. The space first held Konstnärernas buffet, a plain counter serving sandwiches and beer, which is where the name comes from.
In 1931 the artists decided they wanted a proper restaurant. They brought in head waiter Emil Janson from Hasselbacken, and the architect Björn Hedvall designed the interior down to the furniture. That winter members of the Artists' Club painted the walls, among them Isaac Grünewald, Einar Forseth and Erik Jerken. The murals are still there, and the singer Evert Taube was a regular.
Janson's son Gunnar took over in 1951, and in 1980 the restaurant passed to head waiter Åke Håkansson and chef Örjan Klein. KB held a Michelin star from 1991 to 1997 while keeping its relaxed, bohemian feel and its focus on traditional Swedish home cooking.
