The story of Tranan
Tranan, at Karlbergsvägen 14 by Odenplan, opened in 1929 and has stayed open ever since. It began as a beer café for working men, staffed only by waitresses, pouring beer from six in the morning until midnight; breakfast could be warm beer and a sandwich. In the 1930s regulars called it "the club".
The big windows were put in because the police wanted to see inside, and the tables were originally a gift from a brewery. The cellar started out as a dining room with a music trio, closed after the Second World War and reopened in the 1980s as a bar that became a well-known late-night spot.
Fried herring with mashed potato has been on the menu from the very start, and the red-and-white checked tablecloths are part of the look. The designer Jonas Bohlin helped keep the old character during a renovation. Since spring 2018 the wine bar Grus grus has been next door.
