The story of Långholmens Wärdshus
Långholmens Wärdshus occupies Alstavik, a 17th-century manor house on the south side of Långholmen. It was built for the brewmaster Jochum Ahlstedt and finished in 1670, the first stone building on the island. Ahlstedt kept gardens and fish ponds here and malted grain, although his brewery was in Gamla stan.
In 1724 the state bought the house and turned it into Långholmen's spinning house, a penal workhouse for women. When the women's prison moved to Norrmalm in 1825, Alstavik became part of Långholmen's central prison, which finally closed in 1975. The buildings then stood empty and fell into disrepair.
The house was refurbished in 1988–89, and in 1989 the Långholmen hotel and hostel opened along with the inn. Alstavik has been a listed building since 1935. The kitchen serves Swedish food made with local produce.
