The story of Kvarnens uteservering
Kvarnen on Tjärhovsgatan, a block from Medborgarplatsen, opened in 1908 as one of the taverns of Stockholm's licensed alcohol company. The architect Sam Kjellberg designed it, and much of the original interior survives, including the beer hall's high ceiling and arched windows.
It was first called Grå Kvarn (the Grey Mill), after a mill that stood nearby in the 17th century. When the name was shortened to Kvarnen, many regulars kept calling it Grållan. Over the years the hall has been a Bavarian beer hall and an English pub, and the singer Monica Zetterlund had her own table by the far wall.
Since the 1970s Kvarnen has been a second home ground for Hammarby supporters, and a gold statue of the footballer Nacka Skoglund stands inside. When Hammarby won the Swedish championship on 21 October 2001, the party went on late into the night. The terrace got its own kitchen in the 2010s.
