The story of Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan on Skånegatan opened in 1994. The idea came to its founders on a beach on the island of the same name off Thailand's east coast, and the aim was to offer guests a small trip to paradise in the middle of Södermalm. It was started by brothers Thomas and Lasse Emblad; Lasse, a chef, came up with the plan.
Thai vegetables, herbs, beer and spices could not be bought in Sweden at the time, so they were imported straight from Thailand. The room was done up as a jungle with trees, timber, bamboo and wooden benches, and an in-house artist painted the walls. In one extension guests could even eat inside a tuk-tuk. According to ScandAsia the staff had grown from three to 55 by 2004, and a travel agency of the same name had opened around the corner.
