The story of Johan & Nyström

Johan & Nyström is a coffee roaster that started in October 2004 after about three years of planning. Its roastery was in Tullinge, south of Stockholm, and when Realtid covered the company in 2005 it was described as the first new coffee roastery in Sweden in 60 years. Even then it bought its coffee directly from growers in countries such as Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil and Jamaica.

The café on Swedenborgsgatan in the heart of Södermalm was the roaster's first concept shop and has since gathered a loyal crowd of regulars. It serves everything from cappuccino to hand-brewed cups of the latest single-origin coffees, and sells beans to take home. Johan & Nyström also runs a café in Helsinki.

About the terrace

According to the City of Stockholm, Johan & Nyström holds a permit for a terrace of about 11 m² at Swedenborgsgatan 7. The permit runs 1 April to 15 October 2026. The terrace has been in the city's register since 2020, as far back as the register goes.

How Stoligt works it out

Every ten minutes we draw a line from each terrace toward the sun and check whether a building or hill is tall enough to block it. Building heights come from OpenStreetMap and ground heights from Lantmäteriet, the Swedish mapping agency. The times assume a clear day, so clouds are not included here. They are on the live map, which shows today's weather.

Trees, parasols and awnings are not in the model, and we don't know exactly where on the pavement the tables stand. Treat the times as an educated guess, often accurate to within ten minutes.
