The story of Vete-Katten
Vete-Katten at Kungsgatan 55 was founded in 1928 by Ester Nordhammar, who was 42 at the time and had very little baking experience. The story goes that when she was asked what the place should be called, she replied "Ja, det vete katten", roughly "heaven knows". It is a good tale, though nobody can say for certain that it is true.
Ester first ran the business with Anna Skog, who was in charge of the baking. Anna left after a few years and Ester carried on alone until 1961, when she handed the konditori over to four of her staff. In 1979 it was bought by Agneta and Östen Brolin, who ran it until 2012, when it was taken over by a group that included the pastry chef Johan Sandelin, who had worked there since 1997.
The café occupies a turn-of-the-century building, with a warren of corridors, stairs and rooms behind the public rooms. It has always been smoke-free.
