The story of Matbaren
Matbaren opened in 2007 as the more casual half of the restaurant Mathias Dahlgren, on the ground floor of the Bolinder Palace next to the Grand Hôtel. The formal half was called Matsalen. Both rooms were designed by the British interior designer Ilse Crawford. Matsalen closed in December 2016; Matbaren carried on.
In its first year Matbaren won Dagens Nyheter's Gulddraken award in the mid-range category, and in 2009 it received a Michelin star. The menu is built around smaller seasonal dishes, and the wine cellar holds around 2,500 labels.
The building went up in 1874–1877 as a grand apartment house for the industrialist Jean Bolinder. Helgo Zettervall designed it with the palaces of Venice in mind, and it has been part of the Grand Hôtel since 1889.
