The story of Zum Franziskaner
Zum Franziskaner opened on 23 December 1889 at Skeppsbron 44 in Gamla stan. Augusta Engelbrecht started the beer hall as an offshoot of the restaurant Zur Himmelsleiter, and the shop window promised genuine German beer from Munich. Locals often just call it Zum.
The original 17th-century house on the site was pulled down, and the restaurant moved back in when the new building was finished in 1910. Much of the Art Nouveau interior from that year survives, including lamps, stucco and wood panelling. The name refers to the Franciscans, the mendicant order that followed Saint Francis of Assisi. A long-told story dates the place to the 1400s, but there is no evidence for it.
New owners took over in 2017. The kitchen serves Swedish and southern German home cooking, and the beer comes from small breweries in Sweden and Germany, with a soft spot for Franconia. At the back is the Bakficka, a beer hall that often pours gravity-fed beer straight from the cask.
