The story of Engelen
Engelen on Kornhamnstorg opened on St Lucia's Day 1969, in the rooms left by the Ängeln pharmacy. That pharmacy had been in Gamla stan since the 17th century: the apothecary Anders Månsson Biewer received his privilege from Queen Kristina in 1649, and in the mid-1700s the business moved to the corner of Triewaldsgränd and Kornhamnstorg, where it stayed until 1969.
The restaurant kept the pharmacy's name, spelled Engelen. Some of the old fittings were reused, and the gilded angel that served as the pharmacy's sign still hangs above the corner entrance. The 17th-century vaults below became the nightclub Kolingen, named after Albert Engström's boozy cartoon character.
The founders were Bosse Parnevik and Hasse Wallman together with their wives, Gertie and Marie. Wallman ran the place for more than 40 years. Engelen has long been known for live music, and performers such as Peter Jöback and the Ainbusk Singers appeared here early in their careers.
