The story of Villa Godthem
Villa Godthem was built on Djurgården in 1874, on Rosendalsvägen opposite Ulla Winbladh. Admirers of the opera singer Carl Johan Uddman gave him the house as a present. It is a richly carved wooden villa in the Swiss chalet style; one gable has the letters GODT cut into its fretwork, and the weathervane carries Uddman's initials, C.J.U.
There are two stories behind the name. One traces it to Uddman's motto, "Godt!" (Good!). The other has the portly singer arriving in the hall, out of breath after walking all the way home from the Opera, and gasping "Jag har gått hem!" (I've walked home!).
During the Stockholm Exhibition of 1897 the brewery Stora Bryggeriet ran a popular restaurant here, and it carried on after the exhibition closed. The house has served food ever since. The glazed veranda facing Djurgårdsbrunnsviken was added in 1981, and plankstek and hand-rolled meatballs have long been on the menu.
