The story of Pelikan
The name Pelikan is much older than the building. The wine merchant Hans Georg Cron opened the Pelikan cellar on Österlånggatan in Gamla stan in 1664. The tavern moved to Svartmangatan and in 1733 on to Brunnsbacken on Södermalm, where it was long counted among the best in town. It stayed there until 1931, when the block was demolished to make way for Slussen.
The building at Blekingegatan 40 was designed by Sam Kjellberg and completed in 1904. It opened as the restaurant Port Arthur, which the regulars called Pottan. In 1969 it took over the name Pelikan, unused since 1931. The City Museum has listed the building as being of high cultural and historical value.
Marianne Svensson Landgren ran Pelikan for almost 30 years from 1984, and since 2013 it has been owned by the Sürer brothers. Today Pelikan is known for traditional Swedish home cooking and its beer hall.
