The story of Mälarpaviljongen
Mälarpaviljongen sits in the Norr Mälarstrand park on Kungsholmen. The park was laid out in 1941 to 1943 to plans by the city's head gardener Holger Blom and Erik Glemme, in what became known as the Stockholm style. A café on piles out in the water was already here in the 1940s, and the small pavilion from that time still stands as the seed of today's restaurant.
Arto Winter has run the place since the mid-2000s, and it has grown to around 700 seats spread over three floating barges on Riddarfjärden. The season runs from early April to late September.
Mälarpaviljongen is known as an openly LGBTQ+ friendly venue, flying the rainbow flag and holding a yearly Pride celebration. The restaurant has long employed asylum seekers.
