The story of Fem små hus
Fem små hus ("five little houses") stands at Nygränd 10, on the corner of Österlånggatan in Gamla stan. The name is literal: the restaurant spreads across parts of five buildings along Nygränd, with nine vaulted cellars on different levels. The oldest of the five, known as Hans Hansson's house, dates from 1651.
The earliest record of an inn at the address is from 1694. One of the first people to run it was Anna Lindberg, who kept an unlicensed tavern here in the 1690s before it became legal. The place has gone by other names over the centuries: Tre Kungar (Three Kings) in the early 1700s and Tre Prinsar (Three Princes) until well into the 1800s.
The restaurant took its present form in 1969, when ICA-restauranger reopened it after a major renovation with seating for 150. In 1982 it was bought by Roland Persson, a former head cellar master at ICA-restauranger. The cooking is Swedish husmanskost with French touches.
