On a clear day in June the terrace has sun 07:20–15:50 and 17:50–18:10, about 9 hours in total. In short: sun at lunch.

The story of Den Gyldene Freden

Den Gyldene Freden has served food at Österlånggatan 51 since 1722, when the cellar master Petter Hellberg opened it. That makes it Stockholm's oldest surviving city tavern, and one of the oldest restaurants in the world still on its original site. Where the name ("The Golden Peace") comes from is not entirely certain. The restaurant links it to the Peace of Nystad in 1721, but an older cellar in the city already used the name.

In 1919 the tavern was close to bankruptcy. The painter Anders Zorn bought the whole building and had it restored over three years. Zorn died before the work was done, so it was Emma Zorn who reopened Freden in December 1922. Zorn left the building to the Swedish Academy, which still owns it and dines in the Bellman rooms upstairs on Thursdays.

The singer Evert Taube had his own table in the Skänkrummet, and Cornelis Vreeswijk often sat in the same room. Since 2019 the restaurant has been run by Filip Fastén.

Sol vid lunch, according to Stoligt

Times look wrong, for example because the terrace is on the other side of the building? Fix the location in OpenStreetMap and Stoligt will follow at the next update.

How Stoligt works it out

Every ten minutes we draw a line from each terrace toward the sun and check whether a building or hill is tall enough to block it. Building heights come from OpenStreetMap and ground heights from Lantmäteriet, the Swedish mapping agency. The times assume a clear day, so clouds are not included here. They are on the live map, which shows today's weather.

Trees, parasols and awnings are not in the model, and we don't know exactly where on the pavement the tables stand. Treat the times as an educated guess, often accurate to within ten minutes.
